CEREC ® stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic. It’s an ultramodern system that utilizes CAD/CAM technology or computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing to make dental crowns. Besides dental crowns, the system is also capable of producing fixed bridges, dental implants, inlays and onlays, and veneers.
Unlike traditional dental crowns that normally take several visits to complete, these can be done in a single visit. Here are the steps involved:
Before the attachment of the crown, your dentist will first prepare your tooth by removing the decayed and damaged parts.
Once your tooth is ready, they will use a scanner to take 3D-images of your teeth. Traditional dental crowns require messy molding pastes that make patients feel uncomfortable.
The scanner used is connected to computer software that allows your dentist to customize dental crowns to fit your teeth perfectly.
An on-site milling machine is used to produce a ceramic prosthesis based on the derived design. The color and the shape are guaranteed to blend with the features of your natural teeth.
When the crowns are ready, they will be bonded to your teeth. Finally, removing extra cement and polishing the crowns will complete your look.
Before Cerec ®, patients had to book multiple appointments to have their smile restored. The first visit was for taking an impression of the teeth and the second was the placement of the crown. Through CAD/CAM technology, patients only need to book a single appointment, which means they can have their smile restored in just a couple of hours.
